THE LOWDOWN

LILLE

Former Roma and Shakhtar Donetsk boss Paulo Fonseca has created and cultivated an excellent and progressive style of football in charge of Lille this season but it is combined with a truly brilliant defensive record, too, with well over 20 clean sheets across all competitions. They begin the weekend sitting tucked inside the top four and still challenging for UEFA Champions League football.

They come into this one on the back of a 2-1 defeat of Lens in the Derby du Nord last weekend with Edon Zhegrova’s brace enough to hold off a 78th minute eventual consolation scored by Elye Wahi. That means Lille are now unbeaten in their last six matches across all competitions and they are also preparing for a UEFA Europa Conference League quarter-final.

MARSEILLE

At the start of this year, Jean-Louis Gasset was in charge of Ivory Coast as they prepared to host the CAF Africa Cup of Nations. He departed the job mid-way through the tournament as they went on to go and win it and his spell in charge of Marseille began extremely well before the March international break.

They progressed into the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League and managed five successive victories across all competitions and they have scored 18 goals in that time. The southerners, though, do now come into this on the back of three straight losses and were beaten 2-0 by PSG in Le Classique last weekend.

THE PREDICTION

Olympique de Marseille are travelling to Stade du Nord on Friday evening with a UEFA Europa League quarter-final against Benfica offering a potential distraction next week, whilst the same can be said for Lille who have a UEFA Europa Conference League tie against Premier League side Aston Villa. Lille and Marseille have both been very impressive generally and both have been keen to play on the front foot, despite Lille’s aforementioned good defensive record. Both teams scoring looks a good bet for this one.

TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
