THE LOWDOWN
NEWCASTLE
- Newcastle United come into this on the back of a 2-1 win at home to Southampton in the second-leg of the EFL Cup to reach their first cup final this century. Eddie Howe’s Magpies are flying high in the Premier League, too, and completed the signing of Anthony Gordon for a fee of around £40 million last weekend.
- Key midfielder Bruno Guimaraes missed out through suspension and Alexander Isak is doubt with concussion but Gordon is available following his move from Everton.
WEST HAM
- David Moyes remains under pressure but The Hammers come into this on the back of back-to-back 2-0 victories. Those wins have, though, come against League One Derby County in the fourth round of the FA Cup and a win against fellow strugglers Everton a couple of weeks ago. They are still in a precarious position in the table.
- It is touch and go as to whether Danny Ings recovers in time from the knee injury sustained on his Hammers debut, while Kurt Zouma, Maxwel Cornet and Gianluca Scamacca will definitely miss out.

THE PREDICTION
Newcastle United’s Nick Pope could become the first player to keep seven successive clean sheets in the Premier League with the hosts’ defensive record being absolutely remarkable throughout the campaign, across all competitions. In 20 matches so far this season, they have conceded just 11 goals and they have conceded just five goals in their last 15 matches. The home team now face a West Ham United side that have, via both manager David Moyes and captain Declan Rice, discussed the idea that they have strayed from their previously hard-working and dogmatic style of football to try and evolve. Given that, as well as Newcastle’s defensive record, this is unlikely to be a high-scoring encounter but Newcastle are favourites, especially at St. James’ Park.
TIP: NEWCASTLE TO WIN & UNDER 3.5 GOALS
