THE LOWDOWN

NEWCASTLE

In what has been a high-scoring and entertaining Premier League season all round, Newcastle United have arguably been the real entertainers of the entire division. The Magpies’ 33 matches so far this season have consisted of 123 goals as they fight for a top seven finish and potential European qualification.

They do, though, come into this one on the back of a setback as they suffered a 2-0 defeat to in-form Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in midweek. Jean-Philippe Mateta scored a second-half brace to give the Eagles their victory in that one. That loss ended Newcastle’s own good run of form whereby they had been unbeaten in four matches.

SHEFFIELD UTD

Sheffield United will be relegated this weekend if they lose at St James’ Park against Newcastle. The Blades have been destined for the second-tier ever since they gained promotion last season with off-field decision-making and extremely poor on-pitch performances combining to mean they are closing on conceding 100 goals as they plummet back down.

They have let 92 goals into their net this season after a 4-2 loss at Old Trafford against Manchester United in midweek. They led twice in that match, though, and there have been times where they have showed a bit of fight this season. However, with four games to go, becoming just the second team ever to concede 100 goals in a Premier League season seems quite likely.

THE TEAM NEWS

NEWCASTLE

Eddie Howe has had a long injury list throughout this season and they are still missing some key players. Callum Wilson returned to the squad in midweek and there are some players progressing well.

The likes of Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier, Joelinton and Miguel Almiron remain unavailable but are still missing for this one. Tino Livramento faces a late fitness test.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Dubravka; Krafth, Schar, Burn, Livramento; Longstaff, Bruno Guimaraes, Anderson; Gordon, Isak, Barnes

UNAVAILABLE: Pope (Injured), Botman (Injured), Lascelles (Injured), Trippier (Injured), Targett (Injured), Miley (Injured), Willock (Injured), Joelinton (Injured), Tonali (Suspended), Almiron (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Livramento (Injured)

SHEFFIELD UTD

Chris Wilder has also dealt with several injuries throughout his return to Bramall Lane in December. Striker Oli McBurnie is expected to miss the rest of this season with a hamstring injury.

Loanee James McAtee is also a doubt for this weekend with a groin issue, whilst Jayden Bogle is expected to be available for this one after a precautionary substitution in midweek.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Foderingham; Holgate, Ahmedhodzic, Trusty; Bogle, Hamer, Arblaster, Brooks, Osborn; Archer, Brereton Diaz

UNAVAILABLE: Egan (Injured), Basham (Injured), Robinson (Injured), Baldock (Injured), Lowe (Injured), Norrington-Davies (Injured), Davies (Injured), Jebbison (Illness), McBurnie (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Bogle (Injured), McAtee (Injured), Brewster (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

In the reverse fixture between these sides back in September, Newcastle went to South Yorkshire and annihilated Sheffield United by eight goals to nil. It has been a mixed campaign for Eddie Howe and his injury-hit side but they will be firm favourites to put the final nail in the Blades’ coffin this weekend. Sheffield United may take advantage of Newcastle’s defensive issues but a comfortable home win is to be expected for this one.
