THE LOWDOWN
MAN CITY
Without UEFA Champions League football due to their quarter-final elimination at the hands of Real Madrid, Manchester City have finally had a week off from any football as they try and defend their Premier League title in a battle with Arsenal at the top-of-the-table. They begin the weekend below the Gunners but have a game-in-hand as we head into the final few weeks.
The Cityzens come into this one on the back of a comfortable 2-0 defeat of Nottingham Forest at the City Ground with a goal in either half from Josko Gvardiol and Erling Braut Haaland. That means they have now enjoyed five successive victories in the Premier League since sharing a goalless draw against Arsenal on Easter Sunday.
WOLVES
Wolverhampton Wanderers begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting seven points adrift of the top seven and the UEFA Europa Conference League qualifying spots with just nine points for them to play for after what has been an underwhelming campaign. They are heading to what could be a turbulent summer with off-field problems arising.
On-the-pitch, though, Gary O’Neil’s side ended a slump with a much-needed victory at Molineux against relegation-threatened Luton Town last weekend. Hwang Hee-chan and Toti scored the goals that fended off a late Carlton Morris strike. Prior to that victory, Wolves were winless in seven matches across all competitions.
THE TEAM NEWS
MAN CITY
In his pre-match press conference, Pep Guardiola confirmed that both Ruben Dias and in-form Phil Foden have returned to the squad after a recent bout with illness.
As well as those returnees, Ederson appears to be in line to start again this weekend as he 'feels good' after slight concern over a shoulder injury against Nottingham Forest last weekend.
PREDICTED XI (4-1-4-1): Ederson; Walker, Stones, Ake, Gvardiol; Rodri; Foden, Bernardo Silva, De Bruyne, Grealish; Haaland
UNAVAILABLE:
QUESTIONABLE: Ederson (Injured)
WOLVES
Gary O'Neil has been blessed with plenty of returnees for this weekend. Santiago Bueno, Pedro Neto and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde have all trained this week and are expected to be available for O'Neil.
However, he will be without both Craig Dawson and Leon Chiwome for the rest of this season, whilst Tommy Doyle is ineligible to play against his parent club.
PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Sa; Semedo, Kilman, Toti; Doherty, Joao Gomes, M. Lemina, Traore, H. Bueno; Cunha, Hwang
UNAVAILABLE: Dawson (Injured), Chiwone (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: N. Lemina (Injured), Ait-Nouri (Injured), Doyle (Ineligible)
THE PREDICTION
Over the last few years, particularly when Nuno Espirito Santo was in charge of Wolves, the midlanders were the big bogey side of Pep Guardiola and his Manchester City side. Even with Gary O’Neil, though, Wolves had success against City in the reverse fixture earlier this season, ending City’s six-match winning start. However, the treble winners of 2023 are cruising towards the end of this season and a comfortable home win is to be expected.
TIP: MAN CITY TO WIN
