THE LOWDOWN

LIVERPOOL

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have the chance to clinch the first of potentially four pieces of silverware this season when they face Chelsea in the EFL Cup final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday but The Reds have to get down to business at Anfield on Wednesday evening in the league to ensure they take advantage of Manchester City dropping points against the aforementioned Chelsea over the weekend.

Liverpool, prior to City sharing a 1-1 draw with Chelsea, extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table with an impressive 4-1 hammering of Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium. That win also massively helped out their goal difference, heading into this midweek four better off than City; albeit City play on Tuesday against Brentford.

LUTON

Once again, Luton Town faced off against one of the so-called ‘big six’ at Kenilworth Road at the weekend and put in an impressive performance but once again they came up just short as Rasmus Hojlund’s early brace for Manchester United was enough to hold off a Carlton Morris-led Luton comeback and inflict a 2-1 defeat upon The Hatters.

Luton have lost by a solitary goal against Tottenham, Chelsea and United now at home, as well as against Arsenal and Manchester City in games in which they had the lead, too. They also had the lead in the reverse fixture of this one back in early November before Colombian international winger, Luis Diaz, notched a second-half stoppage-time equaliser for Liverpool.

THE TEAM NEWS

LIVERPOOL

Liverpool had issues heading into the weekend with Alisson, Dominik Szoboszlai and Trent Alexander-Arnold among those out injured against Brentford. Then they had several players go down injured, too, with Darwin Nunez, Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota all being forced off.

Jurgen Klopp said after the game that both Nunez and Jones were doubtful for this weekend but not overly serious, whereas Diogo Jotais expected to be unavailable for the next couple of months with a knee injury.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Kelleher; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Endo, Mac Allister; Salah, Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz

UNAVAILABLE: Alisson (Injured), Matip (Injured), Alexander-Arnold (Injured), Bajcetic (Injured), Thiago (Injured), Szoboszlai (Injured), Diogo Jota (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Jones (Injured), Darwin Nunez (Injured)

LUTON

At the weekend, Luton welcomed back former Manchester United defender Teden Mengi into the first-team fold but they did lose striker Elijah Adebayo in the warm-up and that makes him a doubt for the trip to Anfield.

Club captain Tom Lockyer remains unavailable due to the cardiac arrest he suffered against AFC Bournemouth in December with new signing Daiki Hashioka still out injured alongside both Marvelous Nakamba and Mads Andersen.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Kaminski; Mengi, Osho, Bell; Kabore, Clark, Lokonga, Barkley, Doughty; Woodrow, Morris

UNAVAILABLE: Andersen (Injured), Lockyer (Illness), Hashioka (Injured), Nakamba (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Adebayo (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Liverpool have perhaps not been as secure as they have been in previous seasons and there will be slight concerns over that for Klopp and his side but they do just simply appear rampant, especially on the counter attack, an area of the game they were described as the ‘best’ at by Thomas Frank on Saturday. Luton are unlikely to leave themselves too exposed to a counter attack but their ‘up and at them’ approach remains limited against the absolute best teams in the league with a fun and high-scoring home win to be expected.

TIP: LIVERPOOL TO WIN & OVER 2.5 GOALS
