THE LOWDOWN

EVERTON

In midweek, Everton were given four points back to their current tally as their previous ten-point deduction was reduced to six on appeal. That means the Toffees now begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting five points clear of the bottom three and the relegation places but they remain in danger, especially with the looming possibility of another points deduction.

They come into this one on the back of a 1-1 draw with ten-man Brighton and Hove Albion last weekend in a game in which Lewis Dunk scored a 94th minute equaliser for the Seagulls. That draw means that Everton have now managed just one victory in their last 14 matches across all competitions.

WEST HAM

David Moyes has been coming under significant pressure in charge of West Ham United but they managed to pull off their first victory in the calendar year off 2024 last weekend as they defeated Brentford by four goals to two at the London Stadium with Jarrod Bowen scoring his first professional hat-trick in that match.

The Hammers sit tucked inside the top-half of the Premier League table and are very much in contention for a top seven finish and potential European qualification, once again. They do have the added distraction and complication of the first-leg of their UEFA Europa League Round of 16 tie against Freiburg in Germany in midweek.

THE TEAM NEWS

EVERTON

Sean Dyche confirmed that midfield duo Amadou Onana and Idrissa Gueye would have to be assessed ahead of this weekend’s game against West Ham but both of them could well be available.

The Toffees will, though, be without the likes of Arnaut Danjuma and Dele Alli for definite, whilst Andre Gomes is ‘back on the grass’ but not ready to be available for selection this weekend.

PREDICTED XI (4-5-1): Pickford; Coleman, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko; McNeil, Gueye, Doucoure, Garner, Harrison; Calvert-Lewin

UNAVAILABLE: Gomes (Injured), Alli (Injured), Danjuma (Injured), Dobbin (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Gueye (Injured), Onana (Injured)

WEST HAM

David Moyes, who is usually coy when discussing team news and player availability, namechecked two players in his pre-match press conference. He said that Maxwel Cornet will be missing for a 'few weeks', whilst Aaron Cresswell should return after missing out last week.

The Hammers were able to welcome back key midfielder, Brazilian international Lucas Paqueta, last week, and he is expected to remain available.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Areola; Coufal, Mavropanos, Zouma, Emerson; Soucek, Alvarez; Kudus, Ward-Prowse, Paqueta; Bowen

UNAVAILABLE: Cornet (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Cresswell (Injured)

Goodison Park was set to be a fortress after their points deduction in November but it did not quite work out that way. However, as they try and move away from the bottom three, we could and should well have a galvanised crowd on Merseyside. West Ham did earn their first win of the year last weekend but have been generally underwhelming and also have the aforementioned distraction of a European tie coming up so siding with Everton would look the way to go for this one.

TIP: DOUBLE CHANCE – EVERTON TO WIN OR DRAW
