THE LOWDOWN

EVERTON

In what was Jurgen Klopp’s final Merseyside derby in midweek, and potentially the final Merseyside derby ever to be played at Goodison Park, Everton enjoyed a potentially decisive and defining victory. The Toffees eventually cruised to a comfortable 2-0 win with goals in either half from Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Goodison has been crucial for the Toffees as they steer themselves away from the bottom three and the relegation places. They have now managed three victories in four matches with wins against Burnley, Nottingham Forest and then that victory against Liverpool. Everton could be mathematically safe this weekend if results go their way.

BRENTFORD

Much like Everton, Brentford had drifted into the relegation battle but they are also now all but clear as we head into the final four weeks of the campaign. Performances have improved over the last few months and results have now finally followed that way ever since their return from the March international break.

Brentford come into this one on the back of thrashing Luton Town by five goals to one at Kenilworth Road last weekend with a brace from Yoane Wissa as well as goals from Ethan Pinnock, Keane Lewis-Potter and Kevin Schade. That victory followed a 2-0 defeat of Sheffield United and means they are now unbeaten in their last five matches.

THE TEAM NEWS

EVERTON

Sean Dyche has said that Ukrainian international defender Vitaly Mykolenko is ‘unlikely’ to be available for this weekend after suffering an ankle issue against Liverpool.

The Toffees may also remain without Seamus Coleman, who Dyche described as ‘touch and go’, whilst Dominic Calvert-Lewin apparently played through an illness against the Reds.

PREDICTED XI (4-5-1): Pickford; Godfrey, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Young; McNeil, Garner, Gueye, Doucoure, Harrison; Calvert-Lewin

UNAVAILABLE: Patterson (Injured), Alli (Injured), Dobbin (Injured), Beto (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Coleman (Injured), Mykolenko (Injured)

BRENTFORD

Thomas Frank still has a few availability concerns as they travel to Goodison Park as the likes of Rico Henry, Aaron Hickey, Josh Dasilva and Ben Mee remain absent for the Bees.

However, the Dane has said that he ‘hopes’ Ivan Toney may well be available for the trip and that the England international striker is ‘progressing’.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Flekken; Ajer, Collins, Pinnock, Reguilon; Damsgaard, Janelt, Jensen; Mbeumo, Wissa, Lewis-Potter

UNAVAILABLE: Mee (Injured), Hickey (Injured), Henry (Injured), Dasilva (Injured), Maupay (Ineligible)

QUESTIONABLE: Toney (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

For a third successive season, Everton are going to narrowly escape the drop and they have done so, for a third successive season, by using Goodison Park very much to their advantage. That does make next season interesting as they move to Bramley-Moore Docks but that is a conversation for another time. Now, though, with safety on the line, up against a Brentford side still missing key men, backing another home win for the Toffees would appear a good bet.

TIP: EVERTON TO WIN
