THE LOWDOWN
CHELSEA
After a fairly disastrous 2022-23 campaign, surely the only way is up for Chelsea, particularly as the well-regarded Maurizio Pochettino is now in charge of the first team.
The Blues have once again been very active in the transfer market, with plenty of movement in both directions, and the club appear to be on the verge of snatching Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo from under Liverpool's noses.
LIVERPOOL
This Liverpool side has something of a new look to it this season, particularly in midfield where there has been a fairly siizeable overhaul, although not all of that was entirely planned.
World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister ad Dominik Szoboszlai have been drafted in, but more reinforcements will be needed given the fact that Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita have all departed the club.
THE TEAM NEWS
CHELSEA
Wesley Fofana is a long-term absentee while Christopher Nkuku's pre-season injury is a significant blow as the former Leipzig man would almost certainly have been in Maurizio Pochettino's first-team plans.
The new Chelsea boss will therefore likely turn to summer signing Nicholas Jackson - who has impressed in recent friendly action - to lead the line. Centre-back Levi Colwill, meanwhile, could line up in defence.
PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Kepa, James, Silva, Colwill, Chilwell, Fernandez, Chukwuemba, Gallagher; Sterling, Jackson, Mudryk
UNAVAILABLE: Fofana (Injured), Nkunku (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Bettinelli (Injured), Badiashile (Injured), Madueke (Injured), Broja (Injured)
LIVERPOOL
Stefan Bajcetic and Thiago Alcantara are the only known injury doubts, but most of Jurgen Klopp's press conference surrounded Caicedo, who at the time appeared to be on the verge of joining the Reds
Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai could well make their competitive debuts for the Reds, while Jurgen Klopp has some difficult decisions to make in the attacking areas with five players competing for three spots.
PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Jones, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai; Salah, Gakpo, Jota
UNAVAILABLE:
QUESTIONABLE: Bajcetic (Fitness), Thiago (Fitness)
THE PREDICTION
Given that both these clubs have been rather publicly battling with each other for the signatures of first Romeo Lavia and then Moises Caicedo, the fixture algorithm obviously has a sense of humour in scheduling this fixture for the first weekend of Premier League action. In what is likely to be a fiery atmosphere, both teams will be well up for this, and given the attacking talent on show, it would be no surprise to see both teams find the net.
TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
