Yulia Putintseva has not been able to pick up victories in recent weeks, as she lost her opening matches in Toronto and Cincinnati to Shuai Zhang and Liudmila Samsonova respectively. The Kazakh also lost in the final stage of qualifying at the Monterrey Open last time out to Maya Joint, despite emphatically winning the first set. Putintseva lost 0-6 6-3 6-1.

Belinda Bencic arrives at the US Open with strong recent form, although there are some fitness concerns surrounding the Swiss. She impressed in Toronto, beating Sloane Stephens in straight sets before edging past Taylor Townsend and then dismantling Alexandra Eala 6-4 6-0 to reach the quarter-finals. However, a hip injury forced her to withdraw before facing Coco Gauff, while she subsequently retired after losing the opening set to Lois Boisson in Cincinnati.

Bencic’s cleaner ball-striking and ability to take the ball early should give her the advantage, but Putintseva will hope to make things uncomfortable for the Swiss if she is below full fitness.
