Lucie Havlickova arrives in fine form after winning three matches in US Open qualifying to reach her first Grand Slam main draw. The 21-year-old beat Elizara Yaneva in straight sets before producing a standout result against second seed Moyuka Uchijima, saving a match point as she defeated the Japanese player in a deciding set tiebreak. She then comfortably dispatched Nao Hibino. Havlickova has already shown her potential on hard courts in Prague last month, as she easily beat Alycia Parks before a loss to Barbora Krejcikova.

Anna Bondar brings considerably more experience and produced an encouraging start to the North American swing, beating Anhelina Kalinina in straight sets before pushing Elise Mertens to three on her way to a defeat. The Hungarian subsequently suffered an opening defeat to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in Cincinnati. She reached a third straight final in Hamburg back in July, losing to Tomara Korpatsch.

Bondar won their previous meeting in 2023, but Havlickova is a very different player now. She has a genuine opportunity to cause an upset.
