Maria Sakkari has shown signs of improvement during the summer after an inconsistent half of the season. The Greek reached the Athens final in July before recording victories over Zeynep Sonmez in Toronto and Kamilla Rakhimova in Cincinnati. She also took the opening set against an in-form Iga Swiatek, before losing 4-6 6-1 6-1 in round three of the latter event. Sakkari’s best previous result at the US Open came in 2021, where she reached the semi-finals after beating Petra Kvitova, Bianca Andreescu and Karolina Pliskova before losing in straight sets to eventual champion and qualifier Emma Raducanu.

Robin Montgomery arrives with considerable momentum after winning three matches in qualifying. She dropped just two games against Kayla Cross, beating Jeline Vandromme 7-5 6-3 and came from a set down to defeat Carson Branstine 2-6 6-2 6-2. Montgomery has also made significant progress this season, highlighted by winning her maiden WTA title at the Libema Open.

Sakkari possesses greater experience and physicality, but Montgomery’s left-handed game and match sharpness make this a potentially difficult opener.
