Madison Keys will be hoping for a much stronger showing at this year’s US Open after suffering a first-round defeat to Renata Zarazua 12 months ago. She arrives after an encouraging run to the Cincinnati quarter-finals, recovering from a set down to beat Daria Snigur and Katerina Siniakova before overcoming Xinyu Wang. She eventually fell to Sara Bejlek in a tight three set match. Her previous tournament in Toronto was less successful, as she was blown away by Marta Kostyuk in round three. Keys reached the final in New York nine years ago, losing to Sloane Stephens. 

She has a tough task in the first-round as she plays Alina Korneeva. The 19-year-old has been one of the most impressive young players during the North American hard court swing. She reached the round-of-16 in Toronto after qualifying, producing excellent straight set wins over Emma Navarro and Iva Jovic before losing to Coco Gauff. 

Keys possesses considerably greater Grand Slam experience, but Korneeva’s movement and consistency from the baseline could make this uncomfortable. The teenager’s recent hard court form suggests she can keep at least one set competitive.
