Darja Vidmanova arrives in New York in excellent form, with the Czech having won four of her last five matches. She qualified for Monterrey before beating Kimberly Birrell and eighth seed Cristina Bucsa in straight sets, reaching the quarter-finals in the process. She battled hard against Nikola Bartunkova, losing in three sets. She also reached the final in Memphis right at the start of August. Vidmanova has been particularly effective on hard courts this season, compiling a 19-7 record on the surface. 

Jessica Bouzas Maneiro’s results have been more mixed. The Spaniard beat Anna Bondar in her opening match at the Cincinnati Open but then lost to Katerina Siniakova, despite taking the first set. She failed to make a deep run at the WTA 125 event in Philadelphia, winning her first match against Ella Seidel before a defeat to Xiyu Wang. She also pushed Elina Svitolina to three sets in Toronto.

Vidmanova’s aggressive baseline game and current form on hard courts may just give her the edge.
