Brighton and Hove Albion look like they may be keeping hold of manager Roberto De Zerbi this summer. The Italian and his future has been the subject of much talk in recent months and that, combined with extra games due to the UEFA Europa League and an injury ravaged squad, has led to a fairly underwhelming few months.

The Seagulls went to St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon and put in a much-improved performance. They took an 18th minute lead via Joel Veltman before Sean Longstaff equalised for Newcastle United in first-half stoppage-time. That point backed up a 1-0 victory over Aston Villa at the AMEX Stadium.

As Mauricio Pochettino pointed out in his pre-match press conference, only Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal have collected more points than Chelsea since Boxing Day and that does correlate with their improved performances in that time as the Argentine begins to get to grips with what has been a bizarre transfer policy at Stamford Bridge.

They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting tucked inside the top seven and the European spots in the Premier League. They continued their improvement at the weekend at the City Ground. After falling behind late on due to a Callum Hudson-Odoi strike for Nottingham Forest, goals from Raheem Sterling and Nicolas Jackson turned the game on its head.

Roberto De Zerbi, after discussing the performances of Cole Palmer, has confirmed that the Seagulls are able to select Joao Pedro for this one after he returned to fitness.

However, Netherlands international defender Joel Veltman has returned to a long injury list that includes the likes of James Milner, Kaoru Mitoma and Evan Ferguson.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Verbruggen; Lamptey, Webster, Dunk, Igor; Gross, Gilmour; Buonanotte, Julio Enciso, Adingra; Welbeck

UNAVAILABLE: Van Hecke (Injured), Veltman (Injured), Pervis Estupinan (Injured), Hinshelwood (Injured), Milner (Injured), March (Injured), Mitoma (Injured), Ferguson (Injured)

Mauricio Pochettino has been able to welcome back both Ben Chilwell as well as Carney Chukwuemeka to training for this week with a late assessment on their availability for this one.

The Blues are without four first-teamers who will not return until pre-season with Robert Sanchez, Wesley Fofana, Romeo Lavia and Enzo Fernandez all unavailable.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Petrovic; Chalobah, Silva, Badiashile, Marc Cucurella; Moises Caicedo, Gallagher; Madueke, Palmer, Mudryk; Jackson

UNAVAILABLE: Sanchez (Injured), Fofana (Injured), Lavia (Injured), Fernandez (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Chilwell (Injured), Chukwuemeka (Injured)

Since Todd Boehly came in and took over Chelsea, he has spent a lot of money on either buying players or other members of staff, including a manager, from Brighton. As a result, a social media rivalry has built between the two clubs but aside from the fairly pathetic bragging rights on offer, Chelsea could pretty much secure their spot in Europe next season with a victory down on the south coast. Brighton have been much-improved in their last two matches, though, so will likely cause issues for a leaky Chelsea defence and both teams scoring seems a good bet.
