THE LOWDOWN

BRENTFORD

Brentford head into the ‘run-in’ genuinely, and surprisingly, involved in the Premier League relegation battle with Thomas Frank’s Bees desperately needing to string together some results. They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures hovering five points above the bottom three and the relegation places.

Their most recent outing before the March international break saw them stunned at Turf Moor, suffering a shock 2-1 defeat to Burnley with Sergio Reguilon sent off in the eighth minute of that match. That loss means they are winless in their last six matches and have managed just two wins in 17 matches across all competitions.

MAN UTD

It is astonishing that we head into what is the beginning of the so-called Premier League ‘run-in’ with Manchester United somehow attached to the top four or five race and therefore in the hunt for UEFA Champions League qualification. The Red Devils went into the break on the back of a remarkable extra-time defeat of rivals Liverpool in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

Manchester United have played 50 matches across all competitions so far this season but the 20-time champions of England have managed to win just six games by more than a solitary goal. Even those wins can be argued as being largely unconvincing and yet they have often, and this is to their credit, ‘found a way’.

THE PREDICTION

Last season, in Erik ten Hag’s second match in charge of Manchester United, Brentford annihilated the Red Devils by four goals to nil. Some may argue that United have improved but sitting sixth in the table and regularly failing to put together many, if any, cohesive patterns of play over a sustained period of time would suggest they have majorly stagnated. Brentford are desperate but also underperforming their own levels themselves. A low-scoring game in west London seems to await.

TIP: UNDER 3.5 GOALS
