THE LOWDOWN
ASTON VILLA
Unai Emery embarks upon the 2023/24 ‘run-in’ with Aston Villa preparing for a UEFA Europa Conference League quarter-final against Lille next month with his Villains side also beginning this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting tucked inside the top four and the UEFA Champions League spots, albeit it appears likely the top five will all earn UEFA Champions League qualification.
Villa went into the March international break on the back of collecting just a point from their final two matches to put the pressure on themselves in the top four. They were hammered 4-0 by Tottenham Hotspur at Villa Park before Nicolo Zaniolo scored a 79th minute equaliser to earn a point at the London Stadium against West Ham United.
WOLVES
Wolverhampton Wanderers have enjoyed an excellent and surprising campaign as they challenge for a top seven finish and potential European qualification but Gary O’Neil’s side do come into this on the back of a dramatic 3-2 defeat at home to Championship side Coventry City in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup a couple of weeks ago.
Prior to that victory over the Sky Blues, Wolves had earned three victories in their previous four Premier League matches which means they sit just a point outside of the top eight, which is expected to be enough to earn UEFA Europa Conference League qualification for next season as a result of the UEFA coefficient offering an extra place in the Premier League.

THE PREDICTION
This is a fairly pivotal midlands derby for both sides as both Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers are aiming to earn different levels of European qualification for themselves. Villa made themselves almost immaculate at Villa Park until a slump that began a couple of months ago but Wolves and Gary O’Neil have produced some pragmatic, detailed game plans to hinder even the very best sides in the league. Villa should have enough to still break that down but the visitors will no doubt be confident of carefully exploiting the hosts’ high line so both teams scoring would seem a good bet.
TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
