THE TEAM NEWS

COLCHESTER

  • Colchester United’s League Two play-off semi-final first leg against Exeter will be their first competitive game since they won 3-0 at Carlisle United on March 7.
  • They were in sixth place when play was stopped due to the coronavirus pandemic and headed into the enforced break with four wins and four defeats from their last eight matches.
  • With the play-off matches being played behind closed doors any kind of advantage that they would have enjoyed through their home support is not going to be a factor as they aim to take a lead into the second leg.

EXETER

  • Exeter were without a win in four matches when the season was halted early in March and in their last game on March 7 they lost 3-1 away from home against Walsall.
  • That run represented their longest winless sequence during the 2019-20 League Two campaign and they will be hoping the enforced break brings about a change in fortunes on the pitch.
  • Exeter are no strangers to play-off action with this being their third appearance in the League Two play-offs in the last four seasons and they may take confidence from having progressed through to the final on each of the two occasions prior to this one.

THE PREDICTION

This match is certainly being played in unfamiliar circumstances with neither team having played since early March and also with no fans present there will be a lack of atmosphere that is usually associated with games of this magnitude. The two previous encounters between Colchester and Exeter in the 2019-20 campaign were draws and this also has the potential to be a close affair with neither team taking a lead into the second leg.
