Flavio Cobolli continued his fine run of form at the Madrid Open as he won three matches in a row, including a battling win over former world number one Daniil Medvedev, to reach the last eight. However, his run ended after a straight sets loss to Alexander Zverev. This was preceded by a run to the final of the BMW Open. Cobolli has won a title this season, following his success at the Mexican Open in February. The Italian, who is now at his highest ranking of 12 in the world, will hope to produce another deep run at his home event.
He received a bye in round one and now faces Terence Atmane. The Frenchman defeated Zizou Bergs in his opening match. It was a largely comfortable win for Atmane, as he was not broken on serve and went on to win 6-3 6-4.
This will be the third meeting between the pair, and their first on a clay court. Atmane won their first match in Cincinnati last year on his way to the semi-finals, with Cobolli winning earlier this year in Delray Beach. It’s difficult to look past the Italian after his consistent results over the past few weeks, while he will also be desperate to perform well in front of a home crowd.
