Felix Auger Aliassime broke new ground at the French Open as he reached the quarter-finals for the first time after beating Alejandro Tabilo in straight sets. The Canadian struck 17 aces and converted five of his six break points as he won 6-3 7-5 6-1. The 25-year-old has now advanced to the last eight of all four Grand Slam events.
He faces Flavio Cobolli, who is into his second major quarter-final after defeating Zachary Svajda. Cobolli dropped his first set of the tournament but managed to win in four. Cobolli took the first two sets comfortably but lost the third as Svajda edged ahead in the tiebreak. The Italian struggled to close the match out as he let slip a 5-1 lead, with his opponent reeling off five games in a row. Nevertheless, he would find his level in the second tiebreak of the match to seal a 6-2 6-3 6-7 (3) 7-6 (5) win.
Cobolli leads the head-to-head after a couple of wins in Acapulco and Montreal two years ago. Auger Aliassime's experience and firepower may give him a slight edge, but Cobolli has shown enough on clay this season to suggest that this could be a very close quarter-final match between the pair.
