THE LOWDOWN

BIRMINGHAM PHOENIX

Birmingham Phoenix can count themselves lucky that the heavens opened in the midst of their first match of the Men’s Hundred as they were firmly on the back foot having been inserted by Northern Superchargers, before losing a bundle of wickets. However, mitigating circumstances are that the Phoenix were without a number of big-name players such as skipper Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone, both of whom form key parts of Birmingham’s top order, although the presence of new signing Ben Duckett was extremely welcome.

TRENT ROCKETS

Trent Rockets appeared to be very much down and out in the opening fixture of the Men’s competition at home to Southern Brave, but a dramatic recovery led by the bowlers ultimately saved them. Defending 133, the Rockets bowled out Southern Brave for 127, taking three wickets in the final three balls of the match. Daniel Sams closed things out expertly for the hosts, whilst captain Lewis Gregory led by example with three wickets of his own.

THE PREDICTION

Expect a significantly better performance with the bat from Birmingham Phoenix on their own ground even if they remain without the likes of Moeen and Livingstone. Edgbaston has always proven an extremely difficult place for any visiting side to go in the Men’s Hundred and that isn’t expected to change in 2023. Should Trent Rockets play like they did in the opening match from a batting point of view, then this game may well prove their undoing. Consider backing victory here for Birmingham Phoenix.
