THE TEAM NEWS

CENTRAL STAGS

  • Central Stags ended 2021 poorly in regards to results in the Super Smash and much improvement is required on the bowling front in particular for them to get back to the levels shown at the start of the season.
  • Four of the six bowlers utilised by the Stags went at an economy rate of over 15 runs an over in their five-wicket defeat against Canterbury Kings most recently and it would be no surprise if changes were made ahead of this match.

WELLINGTON FIREBIRDS

  • Wellington Firebirds have bounced back well from their loss against Auckland Aces by recording successive triumphs against Otago Volts and look to be building some momentum at just the right time.
  • The expectation is that Wellington will stick to their winning formula here and not make any unenforced changes as they bid to make it three Super Smash wins on the spin.

THE PREDICTION

These two sides head into this contest in contrasting form and if Central Stags are to have any chance here, their bowlers simply must tighten up and maintain their discipline with Wellington Firebirds boasting some serious power at the top of the order. Finn Allen is clearly a crucial cog in the Firebirds’ batting unit and his 68 from 32 balls at the top of the order last time out was a reminder of just how dangerous he can be. After a slow start to this season’s tournament, Allen’s team have started to show the qualities that saw them win this competition last year, so back them to carry on their recent upturn in performances and results by overcoming the Stags in this one.
