Sri Lanka were set for what would surely have been a comfortable victory over Zimbabwe in the first ODI before rain interfered and brought an early conclusion to the game. The hosts had accumulated an impressive 273/9 from their 50 overs after winning the toss and batting first, Charith Asalanka top-scoring with 101. They then reduced Zimbabwe to 12/2 as the rain arrived to have the final say.
ZIMBABWE
Zimbabwe will have counted themselves fortunate that the rain saved their batting line-up, who had lost two early wickets chasing 274 to win in Colombo. Both Tinashe Kamunhukamwe and captain Craig Ervine had been dismissed for ducks, leaving them 5/2 and then 12/2 before the players were taken off. Earlier in the game, despite taking a wicket in the first over of play, the tourists couldn’t keep a lid on the Sri Lankan batting, which will need to change moving forward.
THE PREDICTION
Sri Lanka as we thought, looked far stronger than Zimbabwe in the first game and that isn’t expected to change this time around. The top order batters of Zimbabwe in particular didn’t look promising against an impressive Sri Lankan bowling unit on home turf. It would be a big surprise if Sri Lanka didn’t comfortably outscore Zimbabwe and eventually pick up the win, provided rain doesn’t interfere for a second match running.
