ENGLAND
- England carried on where they left off in the T20 series as they swept Sri Lanka aside in their opening one-day international clash and the hosts will hope that performance will set the tone for the rest of the series.
- Chris Woakes and David Willey starred with the ball but it was the former that truly caught the eye as he finished with stunning figures of 4-18 from his ten overs with five of those ending in a maiden as he helped to restrict Sri Lanka to just 185 runs.
- Jonny Bairstow wasted little time in chasing that total as he whacked a quick-fire 43 off 21 balls before Joe Root steadied the ship with wickets falling and his unbeaten 79 ensured his side claimed a comfortable five-wicket success.
SRI LANKA
- Sri Lanka look a real mess in the white ball game and after a 3-0 series whitewash in the T20s, they got off to a poor start in the 50-over format as they proved to be no match for the hosts.
- Aside from Kusal Perera’s 73 and Wanindu Hasaranga’s 54, the Sri Lankans produced very little else with the bat as they stuttered their way to 185 all out, a total well short of posing England any real threat.
- After the hosts made a strong start with the bat, the tourists started to make inroads into the batting line-up and took four wickets in relatively close proximity but they could not build on it and eventually succumbed to defeat.
THE PREDICTION
England look a class above Sri Lanka based on their opening clash in
the ODI series and another win should be on the cards for the hosts
here. After a 3-0 whitewash in the T20 series, the tourists would have
been hoping to put on a better showing in the 50-over format but they
were unable to get off to a good start. They struggled with the bat as
they failed to deal with the quality of the England bowling attack and
with the hosts also boasting plenty of options with the bat, another big
defeat looks likely for the Sri Lankans here.
