THE LOWDOWN

PAKISTAN

Coach: Grant Bradburn

Captain: Babar Azam

  • Pakistan’s bowlers were put to the sword by Australia on Friday, David Warner and Mitchell Marsh adding 259 for the first wicket, both reaching three figures and Australia’s eventual score of 367/9 was simply too big a target for Pakistan to chase, Babar Azam’s men finishing on 305 all out in response.
  • After being dropped for the match in Bangalore, spin-bowling all-rounder Shadab Khan could find himself recalled to the side, although it remains to be seen whether it would be a like for like replacement with Usama Mir dropping out, as Chennai is usually a good pitch for spinners.

AFGHANISTAN

Coach: Jonathan Trott

Captain: Hashmatullah Shahidi

  • Afghanistan’s thumping defeat last Wednesday at the hands of New Zealand leaves them rock bottom of the group stage table following Sri Lanka’s recent win over Netherlands and they cannot afford to lose any more games at this stage of the competition.
  • Their batters wilted in Chennai chasing 289 agains the Black Caps, eventually bowled out for just 139 with a top score of only 36 from Rahmat Shah.

THE PREDICTION

Pakistan are now under huge pressure following two losses in a row and a defeat here against an Afghanistan side who have never beaten Pakistan in ODI cricket would certainly raise alarm bells to an all-time high. However, Pakistan’s top order should be able to get on top of the Afghanistan bowlers and comfortably outscore their batters, who are among the weakest in the group stage despite their shock win over England. By the end of play, expect Pakistan to have emerged victorious.

BETTING TIP: PAKISTAN TO WIN
