Brighton preview: Hurzeler’s Seagulls
Brighton and Hove Albion come into this one on the back of a steady start to the 2025/26 Premier League season with two draws, three defeats and two defeats in their opening seven matches, with those games consisting of 20 goals.
The Seagulls most recently shared a 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux a couple of weeks ago before the October international break, courtesy of a late equaliser scored by defender Jan Paul van Hecke.
Newcastle preview: Steady Newcastle
Newcastle United have embarked upon a very busy summer transfer window and the Magpies have had to gel at the start of this season but things are beginning to move in a positive direction across all competitions.
Newcastle eased past Nottingham Forest by two goals to nil a fortnight ago to mean that they have now suffered just one defeat in their last five matches across all competitions, even that was by a slender margin and with heartache against Arsenal.
Brighton team news: A few issues
In his pre-match press conference, Fabian Hurzeler has confirmed that both Joel Veltman and Kaoru Mitoma have returned to training this week but the pair remain doubts ahead of the visit of Newcastle.
The Seagulls remain without the likes of Jack Hinshelwood and Brajan Gruda, whilst Diego Gomez is expected to be fine after picking up a knock on international duty with Paraguay.
Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Verbruggen; Wieffer, Van Hecke, Dunk, Kadioglu; Baleba, Ayari; Rutter, Gomez, Minteh; Welbeck
Unavailable: Webster (Injured), Hinshelwood (Injured), March (Injured), Gruda (Injured)
Questionable: Veltman (Fitness), Gomez (Injured), Mitoma (Fitness)
Newcastle team news: Hall now out
Frustratingly for the player and for Newcastle, England international full-back Lewis Hall has suffered an injury which means he is now sidelined alongside fellow defender Tino Livramento and summer signing Yoane Wissa, who will be eased back after returning to light training this week.
The Magpies has said there is also a minor concern over the fitness of Brazil international midfielder Joelinton, whilst Jacob Ramsey is now back in contention having regained full fitness.
Predicted XI (4-3-3): Pope; Trippier, Schar, Botman, Burn; Guimaraes, Tonali, Joelinton; Elanga, Woltemade, Gordon
Unavailable: Livramento (Injured), Hall (Injured), Wissa (Fitness)
Questionable: Joelinton (Injured), Miley (Fitness)
Brighton vs Newcastle prediction
Down on the south coast, Brighton and Hove Albion will be able to try and set themselves about a Newcastle side that have seemingly become a bit more reactive this season with a bit more of a focus on transitional football. The Seagulls will be expected to be on the front foot but that may suit Newcastle with their counter-attacking capabilities, such as Anthony Elanga and Anthony Gordon supporting link man Nick Woltemade.
Brighton vs Newcastle tip: Double chance – Newcastle to win or draw
