THE LOWDOWN

NAOYA INOUE

  • For Inoue’s first fight in the World Boxing Super Series he met Juan Carlos Payano and knocked him out cold with a devastating left right combination. He advanced to fight Emmanuel Rodriguez in the semi-final and added another knockout to his record, finishing the Puerto Rican in the second round to set up this clash with Nonito Donaire.
  • Inoue retained his WBA title in these two fights and in defeating Rodriguez, he claimed the IBF and the vacant The Ring bantamweight title.
  • Inoue is the number four ranked pound-for-pound boxer in the world according to The Ring. The Japanese star is only 26 years old but has a wealth of experience at the highest level and is yet to taste defeat. He has lightening fast hand speed and ferocious knockout power for his size finishing 89% of his fights via knockout.

NONITO DONAIRE

  • Donaire came into this tournament off the back of his fifth career loss which was a unanimous decision to Carl Frampton. In his first fight of the tournament, he forced Ryan Burnett to retire with injury in the fourth round and he was supposed to fight WBO champion Zolani Tete in the semi-final. However, the South African was forced out with a shoulder injury and replaced by Stephon Young, who Donaire put to sleep with a spectacular left hook.
  • Donaire fought at featherweight in his two fights prior to the World Boxing Super Series claiming the vacant WBC Silver featherweight title with a win over Ruben Garcia Hernandez. In defeating Ryan Burnett in the quarter final, Donaire claimed the WBA bantamweight title and retained it against Stephon Young.
  • Donaire is incredibly experienced with 45 professional fights under his belt. He only has a 65% knockout percentage but also packs a tremendous amount of power and looked phenomenal in his last two fights.

THE PREDICTION

Donaire has a lot more experience than Inoue and if he lands clean, he has the power to put the Japanese star away. However, Inoue is already regarded as one of the best fighters in the world and has quickly finished his last eight opponents, so Donaire will do well to push him to a decision.

Winner: Inoue via KO/TKO
