Despite poor form heading into the tournament, Ben Shelton was able to make it through to the second-round of Wimbledon with a straight sets victory. He beat Australian qualifier Alex Bolt 6-4 7-6 7-6. The American came from a mini-break down in the third set tiebreak and will fancy his chances of a deep run at the tournament after several seeds went out on the first two days of the tournament. It was a typically dominant serving performance from Shelton, who won 82% of his first serve points.
Rinky Hijikata will be his opponent in the second-round. The Australian won his first match at Wimbledon after thrashing Belgium’s David Goffin 6-3 6-1 6-1. Goffin was making his return after a few months out due to injury.
They’ve played once before, and it was on grass. Shelton comfortably defeated Hijikata 6-4 6-0 in the round-of-16 of the Mallorca Championships. This should be another straightforward win for the world number 10.
