Ben Shelton vs Lorenzo Sonego prediction
Ben Shelton has still not dropped a set at this year’s Wimbledon as he defeated Marton Fucsovics in straight sets to make the round-of-16. The American won 81% of his points on first serve as he won 6-3 7-6 6-2. Shelton struggled in the warmup events heading into the major, but he has now equalled his best result at the All England Club, having also made the fourth-round last year.
His opponent will be Lorenzo Sonego after the Italian defeated Brandon Nakashima in a five set epic which lasted over five hours. It was the longest match at the Championships so far as Sonego recovered from going a break down in the decider to win 6-7 7-6 7-6 3-6 7-6. The Italian is moving well on the grass and his serve has been increasingly solid as the tournament has progressed.
These two know each other well at this point, having played each other four times, with three of those matches being at Grand Slams. Shelton leads 3-1 and won their two encounters at the Australian Open and Roland Garros this year. Sonego is performing well and is likely to apply pressure to Shelton at times, but we expect the American to make it through.
