Arthur Fery recorded his first win at a major in stunning style as he dumped 20th seed Alexei Popyrin out of the tournament in the first-round. The British wildcard made a brilliant start and overcame a Popyrin fightback to win 6-4 6-1 4-6 6-4. Big-serving Popyrin had made the fourth-round of the French Open but he struggled throughout against the world number 461.
Luciano Darderi will be Fery's opponent in round two as he defeated 2023 quarter-finalist Roman Safiullin in five sets. The Italian looked to be heading out of the tournament after going two sets to one down but came back to win 7-6 1-6 6-7 6-3 6-1. Darderi will be aiming to make the third-round of a Grand Slam for the first time.
The world number 59 isn’t particularly known for his grass court pedigree, which may provide some hope for Fery after such a brilliant and unexpected victory in the first-round. Nevertheless, the Italian is the far more experienced player on the tour and should still be coming through to win.
