Love Island 2019 Power Couple: Week 2

In a week in which new girl Maura revealed to have more faces than a dodecahedron and Tommy invented the ‘560 degree turn’ to sum-up just how much she had snapped his attention, we saw the birth of a new romance in Love Island 2019 that Twitter, at least, is all for.

For those wondering, a 560 degree turn is roughly two and a half owls worth of head-turning, but we are not here to discuss the end of Tommy and Molly-Mae’s limp relationship (no matter how many "great chats" they had about "chatting") but celebrate our new Power Couple: Michael and Amber.

Not yet an official couple, but steaming ahead in terms of screen time as the hottest new prospects, it won’t be long before last week’s POTW Amy accuses them of treason for attempting to overthrow the reigning partnership of the villa between her and Curtis. In fact, look away Amy, as Coral have awarded Michael and Amber some promising odds for the Love Island 2019 title.

‘Mamber’ or ‘Ambael’ have won the viewing public’s hearts this week with their rather sweet and old-fashioned journey to their first goal together. The producers had not-so-subtly shown the pair staring at each other a bed apart in their platonic couples, eyes meeting across the horrid white orb lamps and itchy looking duvet covers. They hold a high amount of legitimacy for the Love Island title also, as despite coupling up with other people, they have not pursued any other Islander during their stay in Majorca. You can refer back to our in-depth study into previous winners for more details. Amber’s character appears to be largely enjoyed now where before her forthrightness could have been misconstrued as rude, and her handling of Tommy’s half-arsed advances gave her the persona of a believable contestant who will not settle for second place. They took Anton aside together to explain this concept to him, which by his facial expression may will have been Michael’s thesis in biological factors of cystic fibrosis. An assist each, which translates as big Power Couple Points (as previously seen with Curtis and Amy) saw the pair held in high regard as the week continued.

Their precocious first kiss was a genuinely heart-warming moment too, unlike Lucie and Joe’s in which they were covered in pink slime and surrounded by onlooking relative strangers. The pair have even seemingly survived the onslaught of Maura Higgins, the villa’s new Lady Macbeth to Tommy’s Shakespearian tragedy, after she picked him for her third date. Following some quite childish name-calling and general abuse from the balcony by the other female Islanders, Maura served them their just desserts, by feeding Michael his.

All hell broke loose between a hypocritical Molly-Mae and her couple-ee Tommy Fury, who decided rather quickly that he is in fact that type of guy, while Michael was upset with Amber’s treatment of the new arrivals. He said ‘you’ were childish. She said she wasn’t. They stormed away. Some time later, Michael decided that Amber was correct and that it was ‘yous’ plural, he had said. As in the collective. But also not her as part of that collective, despite her being present in that collective. Even Amber was surprised at how much she had managed to bend her new love interest’s will, gaining her as many followers as foes on social media. Michael and Amber are unlikely to fade into the background as much as Lucie and Joe. Watch this space.
