Love Island 2019 Player Of The Week: Week 2

What a difference a week makes! Three new arrivals and one secret dismissal later and we find ourselves naming our second Player of the Week ™ Sponsored by The Stats Zone: Michael Griffiths.

It is what it is! It is what it isn’t!

Having collected just the three assists and two attempts on target from his first week in the villa, Michael looked to be a bit-part character, well-liked but a bit of a coaster. However, Michael has come on leaps and bounds and, in slowly but surely winning Amber over, he has performed a rare Love Island U-turn. He picked Amber on the initial Day Zero pairings but was immediately subbed for Callum, before Amber realised there had been a mistake and that Callum was actually the Sound Technician. Now in our second week, we have seen a real surge in the firefighter’s advances. I was going to write ‘hose’ but that would be awfully crude.

Michael’s stats show a whittling down of Amber’s affections over the course of the last four episodes, with three attempts on target including a reconciled argument the pair shared last night. He has shown vast improvements whilst staying on as one of the villa’s main ‘friends’ as a consistent wingman and sound-advice peddler. Two assists is one down from last week, but still a decent haul while he has been working on his own love life. Michael also became our first contestant to ‘hit the woodwork’ as we are putting it. A euphemism may well be intended. Michael was in on goal but Amber parried him onto the bar. Apparently she was taken by surprise that Michael was planning on taking the shot, after leading her away from the group, up two flights of stairs, and onto a secluded balcony. Coke breath was her excuse. As in the cola variety.

Despite insisting that he was not bothered, Michael’s face, body, and general demeanour suggested otherwise. However, again we find Michael reversing a negative stat, as Amber returned, having mouth-washed after her coke, to become the fourth pair to score in Love Island 2019.

A coke? Amber, clearly, has never owned a Nespresso machine.

The pair have had their ups and downs, but Amber has reneged on both her initial subbing of Michael and her kissmissal to make him our Player of the Week. Looking back at our appraisal of Michael, if he carries on in this vein he looks to be a contender for the Live Final like two 27-year-olds before him: Camilla and Jamie.
