THE TEAM NEWS

SRI LANKA

Coach: Chandika Hathurusinghe

Captain: Dimuth Karunaratne

  • Sri Lanka’s disappointing defeat on Friday at the hands of South Africa along with England’s win over India on Sunday saw them eliminated from the tournament so they have nothing but pride to play for like their opponents here.

  • Nuwan Pradeep missed that game due to chicken pox and will play no further part in the competition so talented pace bowler Kasun Rajtiha should be given a chance to get some experience while there could well be further changes.

  • Avishka Fernando and the manner of which he has batted so far has been a bright spot for them and that may well encourage selectors to give Milinda Siriwardana an opportunity as he has only featured in one match so far.

WEST INDIES

Coach: Floyd Reifer

Captain: Jason Holder

  • West Indies will be hoping to produce some fireworks in their penultimate match of the tournament and they will be eager to bounce back after they were well and truly hammered by India at Old Trafford on Thursday.

  • Evin Lewis has been struggling with injury but he has an outside chance of starting this match so he will come in for Sunil Ambris potentially at the top of the order although the selectors may decide not to risk the fragile Lewis.

  • The West Indies have rotated their bowlers around in recent games but Ashley Nurse may come back in for Fabian Allen while Oshane Thomas could be rested with Shannon Gabriel a candidate to come back in.

THE PREDICTION

It is difficult to have much confidence in either of these two teams in this dead rubber and it will be interesting to see which team can motivate themselves the most. Sri Lanka may be the team that can fathom the greater energy and motivation but the Windies have the greater quality. Should one of the Windies batsmen raise themselves sufficiently, they will fancy their chances against this poor Sri Lanka team and they should have too much firepower for them ultimately.
