- India were given something of a wake-up call by Afghanistan on Saturday as they could only muster 224/8 in Southampton and they edged to an 11-run victory as they came perilously close to losing their unbeaten record.
- That will likely serve the same purpose as a defeat would have against the weakest team in the tournament and skipper Virat Kohli will be demanding a much-improved display against an under-performing West Indian team.
- Bhuvneshwar Kumar has returned to training after missing that match and he could come back in for Mohammed Shami despite his hat-trick to close the match against the Afghans but that is the only likely change from the team last time out.
WEST INDIES

- West Indies were all but eliminated with their five-run defeat at the hands of New Zealand on Saturday as Carlos Brathwaite’s heroics fell agonisingly short of rescuing an unlikely victory for his team.
- Other than the swashbuckling innings by Brathwaite, Chris Gayle and Shimron Hetmyer, and some stunning play by Sheldon Cottrell in the field, there were too many other poor performances and failures which ultimately cost them victory in that game and summed up their tournament overall.
- They have been dealt a further blow by the news that Andre Russell has finally been ruled out of the tournament after succumbing to the troublesome knee problem that has haunted him in recent weeks as batsman Sunil Ambris comes into the squad, and they may start to make a couple of changes with nothing to essentially play for now.
THE PREDICTION
The West Indies’ disappointing World Cup campaign all but ended on Saturday with their loss to New Zealand and it will take some turnaround for them to pick themselves up to beat India. Virat Kohli’s men were poor against Afghanistan in Southampton in the other match that was played on Saturday but they will relish the conditions at Old Trafford. Buoyed on by a fervent support, they should have far too much quality for the Windies here, and the wake-up call handed out by Afghanistan will only serve to refocus them for this match.
