THE TEAM NEWS
AFGHANISTAN
Coach: Phil Simmons
Captain: Gulbadin Naib
- Afghanistan came within a whisker of pulling off the shock of the tournament on Saturday as they fell to a narrow 11-run loss to India in Southampton after they produced a superb bowling performance to restrict Virat Kohli’s men to just 224/8.
- They bowled 34 overs of spin in that game and that is surely the blueprint they will follow once again for this match that is also in Southampton and they will hope for a repeat of the performances by Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan and Rahmat Shah with their spin.
- They will have taken great heart from that narrow loss and will be desperate to try and get their first win in this World Cup against Bangladesh, and there is every chance that they will name the same eleven that came so close to beating India.
BANGLADESH
Coach: Steve Rhodes
Captain: Mashrafe Mortaza
- Bangladesh come into this match with an outside chance of reaching the top four but they know this is simply a must-win match for them as they aim to put pressure on England above prior to their game with Australia on Tuesday.
- They were undone by Australia last time out as they could not compete with the 381/5 that their opponents put on the board batting first, but they still managed 333 in the run chase and that was the third time in their five completed matches that they managed to score 320+.
- While Shakib Al Hasan chipped in with a solid 41, this time it was Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah and Tamim Iqbal who made the main contributions and that will give them even more confidence coming into this game with what should be an unchanged team unless Sabbir Rahman and Rubel Hossain rotate back out of the team.
THE PREDICTION
After the stirring display by Afghanistan on Saturday where they came ever so close to beating India, they will have to pick themselves up quickly to face Bangladesh albeit at the same venue. They may suffer something of a comedown after that loss where they put so much effort and energy in that they may find it hard to replicate that. They will however be familiar with the conditions which may give them an edge but they are coming up against a talented Bangladeshi team who are revelling in this World Cup. Their batting line-up is playing extremely well and they have some good bowling to support them which should see them to victory here.
