How Many Points Are Needed For Promotion In The Championship?

We're approaching the business end of the 2017-18 Championship season and the race for automatic promotion and play-off places is in full swing. Wolves have already sealed their passage to the Premier League whilst Cardiff, Fulham and Aston Villa are all in the hunt for the second automatic promotion spot. There is fierce competition for the four play-off places as a total of ten teams are currently competing within that particular sphere.

We've compiled some analysis of the Championship promotion chase since the 1995-96 season. Which team made the play-offs with just 68 points? And who amassed 90 points but failed to earn promotion? We reveal all...

• The lowest points total that earned a play-off spot was Leicester's 68 points in the 2012-13 season, although they did not earn promotion that year. In 2009-10, however, Blackpool were promoted - through the play-offs - following a total of just 70 points throughout the season.
• Conversely, Sunderland's mark of 90 points during the 1997-98 season stands as the highest total for a side that failed to earn promotion. The two automatic spots that year were taken up by Nottingham Forest (94) and Middlesbrough (91), and the Black Cats subsequently went on to lose the play-off final on penalties to Charlton Athletic.
