THE TEAM NEWS

BANGLADESH

Captain: Mashrafe Mortaza

  • Bangladesh enjoyed a tri-nation series victory in Ireland prior to these warm-up matches where they won all four matches including three against West Indies so they have some form despite their first warm-up match in England against Pakistan being abandoned without a ball being bowled.
  • They will take this match relatively seriously to get some much-needed time in the middle and they will know they face a stiff challenge as they face India who will likely play hard and try pick up a win here also.
  • The batting has been in particularly good form based on the tri-nation series in Ireland so this will be a good test for them to see whether the likes of Soumya Sarkar and Tamim Iqbal can still produce the goods against Jasprit Bumrah and company.

INDIA

Captain: Virat Kohli

  • India were comprehensively beaten by New Zealand on Saturday as their top order failed miserably and after being reduced to 39/4 with the likes of Rohit Sharma, Skikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli back in the pavillion, they could only scrape 179 all out from just 39.2 overs which the Blackcaps had no problem in knocking off.
  • One positive for them to take from that match were the contributions from the middle and lower order as Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja produced solid knocks to at least carry them to 179 and the all-rounders could well be key to their hopes in the World Cup.
  • After not exactly firing in recent ODI series and losing that first warm-up match, Virat Kohli will want his men to put in a much-improved performance even though they will want to be peaking at the World Cup rather than these warm-up games.

THE PREDICTION

India were particularly poor in the heavy loss to New Zealand on Saturday and their performance lacked any kind of intensity that we have come to expect from a team led by Virat Kohli. Their form is not great coming into the World Cup but they will want to peak at the right time. Bangladesh’s first warm-up match was completely rained off against Pakistan so they will be itching for time in the middle although this will be a tough test. India are unlikely to be at their best and completely focused here but they will want to get a win under their belts and they should manage that against a competitive Bangladesh team.
