THE LOWDOWN

GARY WILSON

  • Gary Wilson played the match of his life to beat three-time world champion Mark Selby 13-10 in the round of 16 to add yet another shock to this year’s World Championship.
  • The 33-year-old was behind to Selby only once at 6-7 but looked unflappable in his defensive play-style that bore a semblance with the former world number one he beat.
  • Wilson has played his quarter-final opponent Ali Carter once before, in the last 64 of the 2018 China Open, and won in a match where he again took a lead and defended it.

ALI CARTER

  • Ali Carter fell behind early on to his young round of 16 opponent Zhou Yuelong, 1-5 down at one point, before he found his groove in the last session to win the last six frames.
  • The Captain has made it through four of his seven round of 16 matches this season, progressing on from just the one quarter-final, however.
  • 39-year-old Carter has only faced Gary Wilson the once, last year at the 2018 China Open, and lost and these players’ contrasting play-styles might dull Carter’s edge.

THE PREDICTION

Gary Wilson lost ten frames to Mark Selby in his 13-10 win but rarely looked affected and was barely ever chasing a lead. Ali Carter often has games within games where he can be totally different players, but when he finds his rhythm as he did against Yuelong, he can rattle off frames in minutes. Every step in this tournament is Gary Wilson’s most successful, and he has the tools to disrupt Carter at every turn. It truly depends on whether Carter can find his form before he is too far behind Wilson and chasing, as the 33-year-old gives no quarter. The Captain can progress to the last four if he keeps his concentration, but he might struggle in the early sessions.
