SAM QUERREY
- Sam Querrey made it all the way to the finals at the Eastbourne International last week and continued that grass-court form in his excellent win over fifth seed Dominic Thiem on Tuesday.
- The American reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon in 2017 after three five-set matches in a row, including a round of 16 win over Kevin Anderson and a quarter-final win over Andy Murray.
- Querrey has progressed from the second round of Wimbledon each year since 2016 and he will be favourite against Andrey Rublev here.
ANDREY RUBLEV
- Russia’s Andrey Rublev did well to defeat Cristian Garin in four sets on Monday to set up a first meeting with big-serving Sam Querrey.
- 21-year-old Rublev has had a decent year with an 8-7 record to show for a quarter-finals exit in Marseille and a satisfactory clay-court season.
- A win here will see Andrey Rublev surpass his record at Wimbledon by one stage after he exited in 2017 in a five-set match with Albert Ramos-Vinolas.
THE PREDICTION
Sam Querrey defeated an out-of-sorts Dominic Thiem in four sets on Tuesday and seems to be continuously underrated by pundits and opponents year-on-year, especially at Wimbledon. The American has shown himself to be more than just a big serve, although his 22 aces against Thiem did not go amiss, with an excellent defence to match. His 4/4 break points over Thiem show a player in clinical form, and he should defeat Andrey Rublev here on his way to at least the round of 16 stage.
