- Lucas Pouille has made it past two fellow Frenchmen so far in Richard Gasquet and Gregoire Barrere to meet Roger Federer in the third round.
- 25-year-old Pouille has been broken just the once by Gasquet and is yet to drop a set as he reaches the third round for first time in three years.
- It remains to be seen if Lucas Pouille’s run to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in 2016 was an anomaly but he faced Juan Martin del Potro returning from injury and Bernard Tomic falling from grace on his way.
ROGER FEDERER
- World number three Roger Federer beat a spirited young Jay Clarke in straight sets to book his place in the third round at Wimbledon.
- Federer has beaten his next opponent Lucas Pouille once before at the Paris Masters in 2014 but the Frenchman has matured since then.
- The Swiss number one is seeded second at this year’s Wimbledon and he looks to have a clear shot at the semi-finals before he might struggle, with Nishikori a possible hurdle in the quarters.
THE PREDICTION
Lucas Pouille could offer something of a problem for Roger Federer as his first true test at this year’s Wimbledon. The Frenchman went as far as the semi-finals at the Australian Open back in January and has remained unchallenged so far at this tournament, albeit against a diminishing Richard Gasquet and qualifier Gregoire Barrere. However, with each passing game Federer will increase his level and could benefit from a difficult win here in three tight sets.
