  • World number 288 Janko Tipsarevic got past Japan’s young prospect Yoshihito Nishioka in a zig-zagging five-set marathon to set up a difficult second-round match with Kevin Anderson.
  • Tipsarevic, once as high as world number eight, is in the twilight of his career at 35 years of age and will also be partnering Laslo Djere in the men’s doubles following this match, with fatigue likely to be an issue if he progresses further.
  • The Serb has reached the round of 16 stage at Wimbledon twice in 13 campaigns and in what is his 14th appearance here, he has already broken a streak of four consecutive first-round exits.

THE PREDICTION

At 6”8, Kevin Anderson dwarfs Janko Tipsarevic at 5”11 but the Serb has plenty of power to his serve, displayed in his first-round match against Nishioka in which he made 17 aces. However, he comes up against one of the best on tour in Kevin Anderson, who has developed a better defensive game year-on-year to become the rightful fourth seed here. Neither player is exactly in the spring of their career either, but Anderson’s superiority should make itself clear early on and throughout in this tie.
