KEI NISHIKORI
- Kei Nishikori was challenged by Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro throughout but in the end comfortably beat his first-round opponent in straight sets.
- Nishikori has quietly had a decent 2019 with a 24-10 record, one title and two Grand Slam quarter-finals reached so far as he lost to eventual champions Djokovic at the Australian Open and Nadal at Roland-Garros.
- The Japanese number one reached his best ever placing at Wimbledon last year in a quarter-final defeat to Novak Djokovic, again the eventual champion of that particular tournament.
CAMERON NORRIE
- Cameron Norrie put in an assured and mature performance in his straight-sets victory over Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin to set up an intriguing tie with world number eight Kei Nishikori.
- The young Brit played well in taking Kevin Anderson to a deciding set at Queen’s before beating Jeremy Chardy in two sets at Eastbourne, and he also had a very satisfactory clay season.
- 23-year-old Norrie only turned professional two years ago and has surpassed the first round of Wimbledon for the first time in three attempts to set up a first encounter with Nishikori.
THE PREDICTION
This match offers a real opportunity for Cameron Norrie to step-up a level in front of a British crowd after his first-round dismissal of Denis Istomin, but Kei Nishikori has become a consistent ‘week two’ player over the last few seasons and has an abundance of energy in the earlier rounds of Grand Slams. Even if Norrie manages to win a set, or two, the Japanese number one should be able to see out proceedings.
