THE LOWDOWN

All-time meetings:
Gilles Simon 2-0 Tennys Sandgren
Last meeting:

GILLES SIMON

  • Queen’s Club finalist Gilles Simon got through a tricky first-set tiebreak to win in straight sets against Italy’s Salvatore Caruso who had previously beaten Simon at Roland-Garros this year.
  • The 34-year-old will now face Tennys Sandgren for the second time in just over a week after he beat the American in their first match at the Eastbourne International.
  • Simon got as far as the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in 2015 but has since exited at this stage twice before, losing to Juan Martin del Potro last year in the round of 16.

TENNYS SANDGREN

  • Tennys Sandgren came out on top in a four-set match with Japan’s Yasutaka Uchiyama that saw nine breaks of serve.
  • The 27-year-old has surpassed his Wimbledon record with that win having lost in the first round last year to eventual champion Novak Djokovic.
  • Sandgren is on the wrong end of a 2-0 record against Gilles Simon, losing to the Frenchman on a hard court in India last year before tellingly losing on grass last week.

THE PREDICTION

A rare opportunity for almost immediate revenge is upon Tennys Sandgren as he faces his Eastbourne conqueror of last week again here in the second round at Wimbledon. Unfortunately for Sandgren, this match is likely to go the same way, as Simon has had an excellent grass court season so far and is by far the better player coming into this. Perhaps Sandgren could take a set, but even that is unlikely.
