DOMINIC THIEM
- Dominic Thiem’s last professional match was in defeat to Rafael Nadal at the Roland-Garros final and while his best surface is obviously clay, he will be many people’s outside favourite for Wimbledon this year.
- Thiem’s Wimbledon form is negligible having retired from the first round last year and never reaching the quarter-finals, yet he is growing in confidence each year and will be a safe bet for the latter stages here.
- Thiem has a 3-1 record over his first opponent Sam Querrey but the pair have never met on grass which is arguably the Austrian’s worst surface and the American’s best.
SAM QUERREY
- Sam Querrey made it all the way to the final at the Eastbourne International, seeing him move up to 65 in the world, before losing out to fellow American Taylor Fritz.
- Big-hitting Querrey has a blistering serve backed up with a much-underrated game on grass that has seen him shock players such as Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon before.
- Querrey reached the quarter-finals in 2016 and then the semi-finals in 2017 and despite a drop in form over the last few years, he is always a threat to players who cannot return his 130mph-plus serves.
THE PREDICTION
This is an excellent first-round tie for the onlooking crowd but neither player here would have wanted this draw so early on. Dominic Thiem is coming into Wimbledon without decent match practice on grass following his exertions at the French Open last month and will face Sam Querrey who is fit and firing having also just lost in a final at Eastbourne last week. This match could go all the way, and it is testament to their opposing form that a winner is so hard to predict. Logic would suggest Thiem can get over the line but this match could well go to four sets at least.
