THE LOWDOWN
HEAD-TO-HEAD
All-time meetings: Barbora Strycova 1-0 Johanna Konta
Last meeting: Barbora Strycova beat Johanna Konta 7-5, 7-6
BARBORA STRYCOVA
- 33-year-old Barbora Strycova dropped the first set of her excellent Wimbledon campaign but came from behind to beat 21st-seed Elise Mertens in three sets in the round of 16.
- Strycova’s match with Mertens lasted over two hours, interrupted as it was with an injury to her opponent, and she may well feel it in her legs when she plays her second ever Grand Slam quarter-final on Tuesday.
- The Czech was forced to retire from the first round at Eastbourne last month and will not have expected to reach the second week at Wimbledon let alone the last eight.
JOHANNA KONTA
- Johanna Konta lost the first set in her round of 16 match with sixth-seed Petra Kvitova but managed to turn things around to win in three.
- This was Konta’s second match in a row at Wimbledon in which she beat a top ten seed after falling behind, with ninth-seed Sloane Stephens losing out the same way in the third round.
- The 28-year-old is through to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon for the second time to face Barbora Strycova, also for the second time, with the Czech victorious in straight sets back in 2017.
THE PREDICTION
Johanna Konta has had to dig deep in her last two matches at Wimbledon but she looks imperious on serve and as focused as ever. She will face Barbora Strycova who won their only previous meeting in vastly different circumstances, with Konta the favourite on paper and in the stands here. Strycova has had an excellent tournament and could win a set with Konta’s confidence often vulnerable at some points during the match, but the British number one should reach her second semi-finals at Wimbledon.
