ANDY MURRAY & SERENA WILLIAMS
- Serena Williams has seven doubles titles at Wimbledon with her sister Venus to her name and will partner with two-time singles champion Andy Murray after much consternation.
- Andy Murray is using doubles tournaments as a road back to recovery from serious hip surgery and won the Queen’s Club men’s doubles with Feliciano Lopez in his first tournament back.
- The pair are the most decorated doubles partnership at SW19, mainly down to Serena’s 23 Grand Slam titles of course, and will ride a tidal wave of support for as long as they stay in the draw.
ANDREAS MIES & ALEXA GUARACHI
- Andreas Mies is a doubles specialist who recently reached a career-high 22 in the ATP doubles rankings with his men’s partner Kevin Krawietz.
- Alexa Guarachi lost in the first round at the Australian Open and Roland-Garros in the women’s doubles draw and reached a career-high doubles ranking of 65 last month.
- Mies and Guarachi will likely have never played a doubles match in front of an audience as big as the one they will entertain when they play Andy Murray and Serena Williams and they will have to cope with a stark lack of support from the Wimbledon crowd.
THE PREDICTION
The waiting is over, and with Serena Williams’ confirmation in her press conference that she would partner Andy Murray in the mixed doubles, Wimbledon 2019 potentially finds its biggest story. Both Murray and Williams are obvious tennis elite at singles level, especially Williams, who Murray described as “arguably the best player ever”. However, it remains to be seen how the pair will gel as a partnership, although Williams is a seven-time doubles champion here and Murray has plenty of doubles match practice behind him now. Andreas Mies and Alexa Guarachi will find it difficult to establish themselves in front of an audience willing the famous pair to win, and that could tell in a staccato, nervy win for Murray and Williams.
