THE TEAM NEWS

AUSTRIA

  • Austria couldn’t back up their opening match win against Serbia as they fell to a 3-1 defeat against Denmark on Thursday in their second match of the tournament. They now need to win this game and hope other results go their way.
  • They were left to rue a missed penalty from Christoph Baumgartner with just under 20 minutes to go with the score at 1-1, and Denmark scored only minutes later, going on to add a third goal in stoppage time.
  • Against Denmark they made two alterations to the side which beat Serbia, with Friedl and Kvasina coming into to replace Ullman and the injured Wolf.

GERMANY

  • Germany’s resounding 6-1 victory against Serbia on Thursday means that their qualification fate is in their own hands and they need only a draw from this game to be certain of a place in the semi-finals.
  • Luca Waldschmidt led the way for the defending champions against Serbia with a hat-trick of goals, adding to the one goal he scored in their opening win against Denmark. Richter, Dahoud and Maier also found the back of the net in the thumping victory.
  • Germany have a dominant head-to-head record against Austria with seven wins and a draw from their previous eight competitive encounters so they have history on their side in this one.

THE PREDICTION

Germany are looking in good shape in their efforts to make a successful defence of their UEFA European Under-21 Championship title having swept aside Denmark and Serbia to put themselves in with a great chance of making the semi-finals. They have scored nine goals in the two games and are looking supremely confident in the final third of the pitch. Austria had a good result against Serbia but their performance against Denmark wasn’t of the same standard. The German’s should be too strong for Austria so expect them to maintain a 100% record going into the semi-finals.
