THE LOWDOWN

HEAD-TO-HEAD
All-time meetings:
Richard Gasquet 1-2 Roberto Bautista Agut
Last meeting:
Roberto Bautista Agut beat Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-1

RICHARD GASQUET

  • Richard Gasquet did what he had to do against Peter Gojowczyk on Tuesday as edged his German opponent 6-3, 6-4 to set up this meeting with Bautista Agut.
  • The Frenchman should be up to speed on grass having also competed at the Libema Open last week in the Netherlands where he reached the semi-finals at the ATP 250 event.
  • Gasquet is very much an all-court player and is able to adapt to any given surface so he will feel confident in what is a first grass-court meeting with Bautista Agut.

ROBERTO BAUTISTA AGUT

  • Bautista Agut's first-round match saw him win a tight first set against Taylor Fritz before bageling his American opponent in the second set and the Spaniard looks in decent form coming into this second-round clash.
  • The Spaniard is another player who performs consistently across the different surfaces as his game is fairly solid in all departments with no obvious weakness.
  • Bautista Agut has a strong record at this tournament having reached the quarter-finals in 2017 before going one better last year where he was forced to retire thought injury against Borna Coric in the semi-finals.

THE PREDICTION

Gasquet should be well-accustomed to the grass now having competed in the Netherlands last week but Bautista Agut is always a tough opponent so it would be no surprise to see this going to a deciding set. Baseline rallies are likely to be the order of the day here, but if Gasquet can get his one-handed backhand firing with regularity then he could penetrate Bautista Agut's defence enough to clinch the victory.
