THE LOWDOWN
HEAD-TO-HEAD
All-time meetings: First meeting
Last meeting: First meeting
PIERRE-HUGUES HERBERT
- Pierre-Hugues Herbert took the first set 7-5 against Borna Coric in Friday's quarter-final before the Croat was forced to retire with an injury so that sees the Frenchman reach the semi-finals in Halle for the first time.
- This will be Herbert's third semi-final of the season having already reached the final in Montpellier back in February and the last four at the Hungarian Open in April.
- The Frenchman is reaping the rewards of focusing more on singles this year as the world number 43 has been climbing the rankings and he will relish what is a first ever meeting with nine-time Halle champion Federer.
ROGER FEDERER
- Federer will contest his 15th Halle semi-final after coming through a testing encounter with the dogged Roberto Bautista Agut in the quarter-finals with the Swiss sealing a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory.
- It has not been plain sailing for the world number three so far as he has been taken to a deciding set in two of his three matches but his hopes remain of a 10th Halle title - a feat he has not managed in any other tournament.
- Federer made some uncharacteristic errors against Bautista Agut but these are exactly the kind of matches he needs to prepare for his beloved Wimbledon next week as he looks to iron out the kinks.
THE PREDICTION
It is perhaps surprising that these two have never faced each other before but Federer will know what Herbert is about and, of course the Frenchman will know what Federer can bring on his favoured surface. The Swiss maestro has not been as consistent as he would have liked this week but he has performed well in the key moments and despite what is likely to be a spirited effort from the in-form Herbert, it is likely to be Federer marching on to another final.
