BORNA CORIC
- Defending champion Borna Coric survived a tough second-round encounter with Joao Sousa on Wednesday to prevail 7-6, 5-7, 7-6 in a match which spanned almost three hours.
- Coric recovered well from a medical timeout in the third set of that match and he looks to have shaken off that injury as he continues his bid to defend the trophy he won last year when he defeated Roger Federer in the final.
- Coric has won both previous ATP Tour meetings with Herbert with the most recent being a 6-4, 6-2 victory at the Monte-Carlo Masters earlier this year.
PIERRE-HUGUES HERBERT
- Pierre-Hugues Herbert has had a tough run to the quarter-finals having come through three sets against Sergiy Stankhovsky which followed a defeat of fifth seed Gael Monfils in the first round.
- This is Herbert's second appearance in the main draw at Halle and he has already surpassed his previous best so this is uncharted waters for the Frenchman in this tournament.
- Although Coric has won both of their most recent meetings, Herbert did record two wins over the Croat earlier in their respective careers with both matches being played away from the main tour.
THE PREDICTION
Rising star Borna Coric has far more expectation on his back now than he did last year when he was something of a surprise winner in Halle but the 22-year-old has so far lived up to that pressure. He reached the semi-finals last week at the Libema Open in the Netherlands and Wednesday's second-round tussle with Joao Sousa will only have hardened him up for the battles still to come on grass. Herbert has recorded some notable results himself - including the scalp of Gael Monfils in the first round - but Coric's defence of the title is likely to continue into the semi-finals.
