THE TEAM NEWS
SPAIN
- Spain reached the Round of 16 after finishing in second place in Group B as Germany topped their group but they will know that they will have to produce their best performance of the tournament so far against USA.
- They have looked strong defensively in the last couple of matches as Germany could only edge past them by a goal and they were involved in a goalless draw with China that saw both teams progress.
- Spain will take confidence from the fact that they narrowly lost to USA back in January this year and it took a superb individual goal by Christen Press to defeat them, and they will look to improve on that as they aim to produce another solid defensive display to thwart the Americans.
USA
- USA have arguably been the standout team in the tournament so far as they set a new record for goals scored in the group stage as they racked up 18 of them without conceding a single goal to coast through to the knockout phase.
- All 21 of their outfield players have already played some part of the tournament so far as they have been afforded the luxury of being able to rotate given the ease of their matches but they are less likely to take risks in the knockout phase and should field something close to their strongest team here.
- Star Alex Morgan has racked up five goals and three assists in the opening three matches and she will be looking to improve those numbers against the Spanish although this may be the best defence they have faced so far.
THE PREDICTION
USA grabbed the headlines in the group stage with their three wins and 18 goals to demonstrate their qualities heading into the knockout rounds. They face a Spanish team that were second best to Germany in their group and have reached the Round of 16 for the first time in their history. Technically they are good and well organised defensively, but it is unlikely they will be able to hold the Americans for 90 minutes, and the likes of Alex Morgan and company should eventually break them down to progress.
